Examples include DNS,HTTP, and SMTP. DNS stands for Domain Name system and is responsible for creating a uniform naming convention for systems connected to the internet. DNS assigns internet names to IP addresses. When we type www.google.com into a search bar, DNS will map the name of the website to googles IP address allowing the user to access the web page. HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol and is responsible for the transmission of hyperlinks over the internet. When you click on an email link, HTTP directs you to the website the link is referring to. Presentation Packets Widely used SSL or Secure Socket Layer is a protocol designed for cryptographic security when communicating over a network. IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol is a protocol we use on a daily basis as it is responsible for collecting email messages from the email server. Session Stupid Protocols in the session layer are designed to assist application layer protocols with connectivity. NetBIOS is the most well known session layer protocol and is the foundation of Windows file sharing. NetBEUI takes NetBIOS one step further with a graphical interface for windows file share.
