IP addressing via IPv4, IPv6 and subnet masks along with the TCP and OSI models are the core components of internet communication as we know it. During the inception of IPv4 the development teams never thought the 4 billion addresses would be used. During the technological boom of the 1990s nearly all of the IPv4 addresses had been assigned and Ipv6 was born. IPv6 has a total of 340 trillion trillion trillion individual addresses. Instead of the standard 32 bit addressing format IPv6 utilizes 128 bit addressing. The internet itself has expanded far beyond the point of what we imagined and will continue to expand as we incorporate more internet connected devices into our lives. The TCP/IP model is often referred to as a condensed and early version of the OSI model. Unlike the OSI models 7 layers, the TCP model only has 4 layers. The four layers of the TCP model are the network interface layer, the network layer, the transport layer, and the application layer. The OSI model on the other hand contains the physical layer, the data link layer, the network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer and application layer.
