IT283M3_Part1.docx IPv6 Neighbor Discovery, Addressing, and Name Resolution Purdue University Global IPv6 Neighbor Discovery and DHCP Neighbor Discovery (ND) is a protocol made for IPv6. This protocol allows for different nodes on the same link to show themselves to neighbors and allows for them to discover the existence of their neighbors. In the article “IPv6 Configuration Guide, Cisco IOS Release 15.2M&T†from the Cisco website, states that IPv6 neighbor discovery uses ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) messages and solicited-node multicast addresses to determine link-layer address of a neighbor on the same network, verify that the neighbor can be reached, and track these neighboring devices that it discovers. Neighbor discovery has many different functions and can be used by nodes, hosts, and routers. Nodes can use neighbor discovery to determine reachability and if the link-layer address that was established has changed. A host can use neighbor discovery to discover other routers as well we address configuration and other configuration restrictions. Lastly, neighbor discovery can be used by routers to display their presence to other neighbors and notify the hosts of a better address to forward messages too. In the article “IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol Explained†from ComputerNetworkingNotes, states that there are five different types of neighbor discovery messages; router solicitation, router advertisement, neighbor solicitation, neighbor advertisement, and redire. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
