The historical, political, and economic context within a culture, plus their social relations of power to tend to create and establish social norms, practices, and behaviors within a culture (Sorrells, Sekimoto, & Nakagawa, 2016). Because of these factors, the way we communicate interculturally will vary dramatically. This is especially true as we head toward a more interconnected society. Due to this quick advance in technologies many organizations are compelled to adapt to a more data-driven world where consumers expect a personalized experienced, no matter the cultural background (Pickard, 2015). One example of how intercultural communication could take place would be in school. The English as a second language program (ESL) or bilingual programs are great ways to demonstrate intercultural communication in action. An individual coming into a setting where they don™t understand a single phrase anyone is speaking can make themself feel like an outsider, hence creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. Which is why it is important for an ESL or bilingual teacher to have the ability to relate and connect with these individuals based upon these struggles.
