Television was at it™s all time ... glory with shows like œThe Cosby Show, œWho™s the Boss, œFamily Ties and the list goes on. One show stood in a category to itself œThe Golden Girls. Through the lenses of history, humanities, natural and applied science and finally, social sciences, we can assert that this was truly one of the most iconic shows of all time and thus a true pop culture artifact. History œThe Golden Girls saw many historical events occur during the duration of the show and also addressed them with poise, class and was an educational tool for many watching from the comforts of home. A perfect example is "The Golden Girls" Letter to Gorbachev (TV Episode 1987), explored the deep divisions of war between the then Soviet Union and the United States of America. The episode revolves around Rose, whom wrote a letter to Russian President Gorbachev, discussing hear fears of nuclear war and wishing for peace between nations(S., 2018). Watching this episode helps to understand historically, how close to nuclear war the US was back during that time period. People had a profound sense of fear due to the falling of communist USSR. One scene in particular, had Rose doing a speech to address the soviet people, where she was sandwiched by two pictures of Lenin and Marx, adding additional historical content to what was going on.
