4_2_milestone_history.docx 4-2 Final Project Milestone Two Analyzing an Issue or Event in Technology through the Lenses of History and the Humanities IDS-402 “ 20EW2 History Lens History is the study of events that occurred in the past including the various factors that develop the whole story surrounding that timeframe. Policing in America has gone through very many changes with it being founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1636. At the time, the police officers were known as the œwatchmen, and was ran by volunteers (Potter, n.d.). As time continued, more states began to follow suit, and 1838, the city of Boston established the first American police force. By the 1880™s, all major U.S. cities had municipal polices forces in place and were known as œmodern police organizations (Potter, n.d.). The œmodern police organizations were followed by most states and shared similar characteristics in that 1.) police officers were publicly supported and bureaucratic in form; 2.) police officers were fulltime employees, not community volunteers; 3.) departments had permanent rules and procedures; 4.) police departments were accountable to a central governmental authority (Lundman, 1980). The southern states, however, took a different approach. The central point for modern policing for southern states can be found in œSlave Patrol (Platt, 1982).
