One of the problems that can impact quality of care and patient safety is communication, which is and should be of the utmost importance because it can save lives. Communication can have a tremendous impact on so many different areas within the healthcare system and its different environments, and while it compromises quality of care and can also cause costs to increase. When there are communication barriers between patient and medical staff, then the delivery of care to patients is diminished. However, this communication barrier can also be between medical staff and different departments within the healthcare organization such as management. Communication between patient and provider can be whether each party involved understands information being conveyed such as signs and symptoms as well as the treatment plan. When a patient presents with a medical condition, it is critical that the medical staff can understand the patient and the medical condition they present with. There could be many barriers to communication such as language.
