Racism in Australia’s Health System In the research Article “Strategic approaches to enhanced health service delivery forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with chronic illness” Aspin et al. (2012) discuss theimpact of racism in damaging and the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI)people. Racism is exemplified in disparities in access and subtle as well as dubious practiceswithin health and other institutions and programs. The qualitative study examined the differentstrategies to promote quality care provided to ATSI people. Aspin et al. (2012) conductedinterviews with 16 ATSI patients with chronic diseases and three family members taking care ofthe patients. During the interview, all the participants who were interviewed highlighted thechallenges they encountered when seeking medical services. Aspin et al. (2012) stated thatmajority of the people who were interviewed reported that they felt discriminated from thehealthcare professionals and agencies. In the study by Aspin et al. (2012), two Aboriginal clinics were surveyed, and theparticipants responded to a questionnaire that was used during the interview. To conduct thestudy, ethical permission was granted by different ethical organizations. The participantsincluded patients aged between 34 to 70 years who had been admitted for one or more chronicillness such as heart failure, COPD, and diabetes. The participants were allowed to fill thequestionnaires on their own, and those who needed assistance were helped to fill thequestionnaire by their family members. The research team analyzed of the patients’ feedbackfrom the questionnaire. ATSI people explained the challenges they encountered in accessinghealth care services and their struggle to achieve quality health care. Discrimination hasnegatively impacted healthcare system in Australia and has resulted in poor outcomes of ATSI.The ATSI people reported the experiences of discrimination while seeking health care services
