Communication > ESSAY > Information Overload (All)
To me, one of the most flagrant red flags with regards to assessing the validity of information online is when I read a headline or an excerpt from an article that physically makes me react. Whether ... it be my anxiety about the situation skyrocketing, or my adrenaline pumping, or even dopamine levels increasing noticeably, these can be good indicators that I am about to be distracted for an hour and a half from my original goal. The internet is full of these easy distractions that offer little in terms of well laid out arguments and thoughts and a lot with regards to activating your brain’s pleasure center. Additionally, like many have said already, it is important to have sources that you can rely on when looking for information. Personally, I tend to trust well respected news organizations such as CBC because there is a degree of certainty you can rely on that is hard to find. But I also like being a part of an open forum with regards to certain topics, I am a big Reddit user and I feel that sometimes the best information can be found by poling the public and being aware of general perceptions and misconceptions.
