Nurses, and forward thinking theorists, such as Nightingale, Wiedenbach, and Watson, along with many others, have provided the theories that not only created, and continue to refine, the framework of nursing as a profession, but also help guide the ethical effective practice of nursing. While the proliferation and implementation of nursing theories has certainly increased in the last twenty years, many of the pioneer theorists’ ideas are still relevant and applicable (Im & Chang, 2012). These theories, both old and new, not only encompass and involve “big picture” problems or issues affecting nursing, but also provide specific tools that a nurse could use to solve a clinical practice problem. Nursing theories are able to provide this assistance in solving clinical practice problems by helping individual nurses identify problems, evaluate the specifics of a problem systematically, and predict what measures might result in a desired outcome (Taylor et al, 2011). In general, nursing theories may be divided into three basic types: grand, middle-range, and practice theories. While all of these theory types have some level of applicability to the profession of nursing and an individual nurse’s professional actions, when the question, or problem, presented involves a specific nursing practice, a practice theory is probably the most appropriate. This is due to the fact that practice theories are meant to identify a particular situation in the nursing profession, help the nurse develop goals based on that situation, and typically provides some specificity on how to achieve the desired goals.
