NURS 6630 Approaches to Treatments Mood Disorders in Pediatrics | Walden University Mood Disorders in Pediatrics Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental illnesses that affe... ct nearly 16.6% of people over their lifespan (Neavin, Joyce, & Swintak, 2018). However, many pediatric patients that are suffering from symptoms of MDD go undiagnosed, which could eventually lead to a persistent mental disorder due to the failure of proper treatment both psychologically and physically (Neavin, Joyce, & Swintak, 2018). Although diagnosing in children often goes unrecognized, statistics show nearly a 9.5% cumulative prevalence of depression in pediatric patients by the time they reach adolescent (Neavin, Joyce, & Swintak). According to the American Psychiatric Association [APA], (2013), in order to be diagnosed with MDD, diagnostic criteria must be met with at least 5 symptoms present for a period of 2 weeks. The symptoms include either a depressed/irritable mood, or a loss of interest or pleasure, with additional symptoms including loss of weight, daily insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation, daily fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt, diminished concentration, or recurrent thoughts of death (APA, 2013).
