*NURSING > DISCUSSION POST > NR 500 Week 3 Discussion: Person-Centered Care-Chamberlain College Of Nursing: GRADED A (All)
Person-Centered Care This week's topic is a very personal one. The definition of person-centered care to me is healthcare customized for each patient which requires a strong patient-clinician/caregi... ver relationship in order to have positive health outcomes. It is specific to the patient’s belief regarding health treatments and how they view illness from a broad perspective. In this care patients’ rights and beliefs are respected as they are actively involved in making health decisions. According to the American Holistic Nurses Association (1998), holistic nursing is described as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal”. Caring doesn’t just entail physiological issues but involves psychological, spiritual, cultural, and social issues. This aspect of nursing has been explored from the beginning of the nursing profession and is proven to be beneficial to patient care. The way in which I will apply holistic care in my practice, Is making sure I connect my patients. Normally our goal is to the treatment of patients' physiological illness, however connecting with your patients and understanding what is going on in their lives can help with healing. I will ensure I acknowledge that they are a “whole person” and identify potential problems that may be preventing healing. Establishing a connection with my patient will let them feel relaxed and be apart of the treatment process. In healthcare cultural humility I s having empathy, respect and critical self- reflection (Huges et al.,2019). Without self- reflection, one is unable to have cultural humility, nurses have to be aware of the patient's different culture and accept and understand their differences in order to achieve or promote effective care. Applying open-mindedness to my practice is one way I will apply the principle of cultural humility. Having an open mind will help me to understand different cultural values and beliefs and understand how my patients are thinking. This will help improve communication and help integrate their culture into their care and develop attainable This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-17-2022 00:42:07 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/50151515/Person-Centered-Caredocx/ 2 goals for positive health outcomes. I will make sure not to treat patients differently because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, and socioeconomic status. Having self-reflection is the most important principle to attain in order to effectively care for patients, as this will help gain insight and identify personal values and beliefs. Being introspective can help to gain insight into my level of care. Evaluating my interactions with my patients is the way to use this principle in my practice. Look at what went well, what mistakes made, what could improve and how I can learn from my mistakes moving on. Continuous selfevaluation and self-reflection will help to improve my growth as a CPN.
