*NURSING > DISCUSSION POST > NR 506 Week 7 Graded Discussion Topic; RN as Healthcare Policy Leader (All)
As a health policy professional leader, communicating with lay audiences is an important skill in promoting the health of the community for master prepared registered nurses. Develop a concise posit... ion statement reflecting the research findings and recommendations by experts as they relate to workplace support for breast feeding mothers, medical marijuana services in the community, genetic testing or applications of stem cell research, transgender care, abortion, end-oflife care, or a community service administered by Family Nurse Practitioners (if you pick this one be specific about the type of community service the FNP would work in or manage). Breastfeeding has become a hot topic in recent months. Women are being shamed for breastfeeding their babies in public and even kicked out of public places. Breastfeeding an infant is natural and should not be seen as an offense. We all know that breastmilk is the best nutrition for an infant or a young child and there is plenty of research to support this. According to Bai and Wunderlich (2013), breastfed children have a six times greater chance of survival in the early months as well as helps protect the babies against asthma, childhood obesity, ear infections, and type two diabetes. It is challenging for women working outside the home to combine breastfeeding with their full-time employment. Breastfeeding promotion and support in the workplace is necessary to encourage continued breastfeeding among employed mothers. Successfully combining breastfeeding with employment, the particular needs of the employed mothers should be considered at the workplace intervention programs (Yimyam & Hampa, 2014). Though plenty of research states that breastmilk is the best food for infants and young children, many workplaces do not accommodate breastfeeding employees. Employers should support the women that decide to breastfeed their children and provide adequate accommodations like a designated room for breastfeeding/express breast milk during work hours (Yimyam & Hampa, 2014). Breast milk is crucial to an infant’s health and development. Employers need to be educated about the importance of breastfeeding and provide adequate accommodations and support to their breastfeeding employees. By doing so, infants and young children receive the nutrition and antibodies they need to combat illness and therefore can assist with less absenteeism due to a sickness of the child. The key is to educate employers that the promotion of breastfeeding and supporting their breastfeeding employees, will in the long run benefit not only the mother and infant but also the company as well. Parents who feel supported by their employers will be more inclined to be a more productive and miss less work to care for ill children.
