NR 360 Week 3 Discussion Healthcare Technology Local National and Globa... l Considerations Imagine that you are a public health nurse, and you and your colleagues have determined that the threat of a deadly new strain of influenza indicates a need for a mass inoculation program in your community. What public health data would have been used to determine the need for such a program? Where would you locate public health data? What data will be collected to determine the success of such a program? How might you communicate this to other communities or internationally? (CO 1,2,4,5, 6,7,8) Answer A new strain of influenza would cause a need for mass inoculation in any community. It is a way to annihilate a new virus and create antibodies before it causes any symptoms or death. In order to implement such a program, one must determine many things through public health data bases. Some things to research would include the population in age brackets, vaccine history, and community make up (McGonigle & Mastrian, (2015). The public data could also include how diverse the population is and how often and far people have traveled. They should also know how many people have already gotten the influenza with the new strain and which area of the community is the most vulnerable. I would be able to locate public health data from multiple databases. One such database is CDC Wonder. It was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This database provides information and resources to the public. The CDC Wonder website includes information on most of the diseases that have been discovered (CDC, 2010). It also includes information on the environment, mortality, and populations. To determine the success of such a program, one may look at multiple reports. When looking through the site, one may see reports on the effectiveness of vaccines which will determine if the program is successful. It is even broken down by different periods of time so you can see if it was our mass inoculation program that caused those specific results. You are able to communicate this to other communities or internationally by submitting your research to the website. The data that may be collected to determine if the program is successful is to see how many people are submitting cases of the same influenza and to see in what area. If the rate of incidence is lower and the geographic area is further away from where the program is located, the program was successful. After analysis, they determine whether the submission is appropriate and effective and then the report will be posted on the site. Anyone internationally may be able to view this information. You may also communicate this information my publishing it and submitting to the World Health Organization. NR 360 Week 3 Discussion Healthcare Technology: Local, National, and Global Considerations Mankind seems to have gained several advantages against influenza. We have the capacity to design and manufacture vaccine against influenza which is one of the main reasons why we haven’t have a pandemic like the one in 1981. But as we travel more often to different countries the more is more at risk for having a deadlier pandemic. Ebola and the Zika virus are one of the most recent outbreaks we had. The main thing with the viruses is early understanding on how the virus is transmitted and early detection. Epidemiologists are analyzing death records and serological data to better understand patterns of transmission, morbidity, and mortality in past influenza pandemics. Such findings could inform planning for public health interventions to This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-24-2022 10:04:49 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/22108115/NR360-week-3/ reduce the incidence of severe outcomes in future pandemics. In particular, these studies reveal a signature change in excess mortality from the elderly to younger age groups, a “pandemic age shift,” that occurred with each of the three pandemics of the 20th century. If such a shift could be recognized in incipient pandemics, it might allow sufficient time for the production and distribution of vaccine and antiviral drugs before the worst pandemic impact occurs (ncbi, 2012). Many states have their own systems for reporting data. Usually these systems include births, deaths, marriages, and divorces. A core public health function is statewide injury data collection and analysis. This data collection provides data for mortality statistics found on most state public health Web sites. Check individual state public health department Web sites to find what is provided. Often local statistics are available by census tract, community, county and region. Cities and regions are also providing Internet access to data (Turnock, 2008). The information can be communicated through local and international news to make communities aware of the outbreaks http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK22148/ Turnock BJ.
