I was even apprehensive about participating in the assigned simulated conflict due to the anticipated difficulty and unpleasantness I would likely face. In preparation for the Mursion simulation, I researched reputable sources on resolving conflicts. One such source in Journal of Oncology Practice revealed Dr. Stanley Wachs, conflict resolution specialist, discussing why people are fearful of dealing with conflict. “Conflict is associated with negative emotions such as resentment, anger, impatience, and bitterness†(Wachs, 2008, p. 37). However, Wachs stresses that the only resolution to conflict is through confrontation of the individual with whom the conflict exists (p. 37). We must communicate. Communication is crucial to resolving conflict, and nursing professionals must engage in mindful communication. Mindful communication includes empathetic listening in a respectful, non-judgmental manner, while being conscious of both verbal and non-verbal communication conveyed. Words matter, as do our facial expressions and body posture, especially during attempt to reach across the aisle for the sake of compromise and resolution.
