Nurses will most likely be involved and have a major influence on the ending outcome. After reading the case scenario with Mr. Newcomb, I immediately had a train of thoughts come to mind. I soon realized that this is not a situation that has a distinct right or wrong answer. The principles of beneficence, non- maleficence, autonomy, and justice will all have to be considered before an ultimate action is taken. I will also have to make sure I am self-aware and evaluate how much influence my own beliefs and values will contribute to the outcome. Lastly, having a plan for self-care in place will be important due to the emotional stress that could arise from the close patient relationship. Ethical Principles The four ethical principles being used in this scenario will be explained in more detail below. Each principle will play a key role in the outcome of this dilemma. Response My first response to Mr. Newcombs request would be to take a moment and evaluate the situation before responding prematurely. Initially I would assess his orientation and if he is able to make decisions for himself or if Mrs. Newcomb is making them due to his current state and acuity of illness.
