Unfortunately, its not always black and white, and in the role of the nurse you have to make sure you are advocating for the patient as well as protecting yourself. In this particular scenario involving Mr. Newcomb, I feel initially I would be very taken aback at the fact that I was asked to do what he asked. I would assure him that I would continue to protect his patient privacy, but that I would not feel comfortable initiating or organizing any portion of that request. I dont feel comfortable putting myself into a situation where I felt like I was being dishonest to any party involved. I would also assure him that his privacy would in no way be compromised. Application of Patient Principles I decided to start with autonomy when talking about the four patient principles. When speaking about autonomy you are talking about respect for a person. To me this means they are free AND have the right to make their own decisions about things. This can be health care related or otherwise. As long as this persons decisions do not affect another persons decisions, that person is free to decide what they want.
