Ethical Principle Application task 2.docx Ethical Principle Application Task 2 – RGP1-RGP Western Governors University Ethical dilemmas are often addressed in healthcare settings by maintaining principles of autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence and justice. Ethical dilemmas in nursing are not only concerned with making the right decision in difficult situations but also justifying the decisions nurses in health care make. Factors that contribute to ethically difficult decisions include conflicting values or feelings of frustration about actions that are insufficient or inconsistent with ones conscience. (Holm 2014) There is also the responsibility to ensure equal and fair treatment to all the parties involved including myself, the patient, the patients mistress, and his wife. In response to Mr. Newcombs request, I would respect his right to autonomy and respect his wish but would not lie to Mrs. Newcomb. Although I can inform security that Mr. Newcomb does not wish to have visitors except the specified visitor he is requesting. I would inform Mr. Newcomb that due to my code of ethics and duties as a nurse, I would not be able to lie to Mrs. Newcomb. I do feel he has a right to spend time and say goodbye to those he loves during his end of life care but would not get involved in the personal aspect between Mr. Newcomb and his wife. As a nurse and advocate for my patients, it is my duty to support autonomy, beneficence justice and non-maleficence.
