C304 Professional roles and value Task 2: Ethical Principle Application Course Name: C304 Professional Roles and Values Western Governors University This is a huge dilemma as a nurse. My instinct is to help a dying man with his wishes, but I shall stay true to my profession and be ethically responsible. I would tell him that I cannot lie to his wife for him. Mr. Newcomb needs to talk to his wife himself and figure out how he wants to navigate this himself. I would also assure him that I understand that his want to get in touch with someone he has once loved, but I cannot be involved in his personal affairs in this manner. I would also assure him that I pass no judgement on to him, but I must abide by my professional boundaries. According to our book, Contemporary Nursing: Issues, Trends, and Management, beneficence is to do good and promote goodness. (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). As a nurse, I must apply the principle of beneficence while taking care of a dying man. I should make sure his last days are as comfortable as possible. This means that my duty is to provide him with pain medication, hydration, comfort, compassionate care, nutrition, entertainment, and privacy during his last days. I should also apply the principle of non-maleficence, which is to not do any harm. (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). Mr. Newcomb is the center of my care and he shall remain so throughout my care. If I comply with his wishes of lying to his wife will be being maleficent.
