One Nursing Theory that has influenced my Goals and Values One nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is transcultural nursing; a theory that was pioneered in the 1960s by Madeleine Leninger (“Transcultural Nursingâ€, 2012). Leninger believed that in order to provide effective care, it was important for nurses to know and respect their patients cultural values and practices (“Transcultural Nursingâ€, 2012). In the 1960s Leninger coined the term “culturally congruent care†(“Transcultural Nursingâ€, 2012). In it she emphasized the importance of patients cultural background on their ability to clearly communicate their symptoms, their pain levels and even understand their diagnoses (“Transcultural Nursingâ€, 2012). Additionally, the nurse and patient collaborate on the creation and implementation of a wholistic nursing plan; one that fits the patients cultural norms (“Transcultural Nursingâ€, 2012). A1.
