C304 – Professional Roles & Values C304 â€“ Professional Roles & Values Task 1 A. One Nursing Theory that has influenced my Goals and Values One nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is transcultural nursing; a theory that was pioneered in the 1960s by Madeleine Leninger (â€œTranscultural Nursingâ€, 2012). Leninger believed that in order to provide effective care, it was important for nurses to know and respect their patients cultural values and practices (â€œTranscultural Nursingâ€, 2012). In the 1960s Leninger coined the term â€œculturally congruent careâ€ (â€œTranscultural Nursingâ€, 2012). In it she emphasized the importance of patients cultural background on their ability to clearly communicate their symptoms, their pain levels and even understand their diagnoses (â€œTranscultural Nursingâ€, 2012). Additionally, the nurse and patient collaborate on the creation and implementation of a wholistic nursing plan; one that fits the patients cultural norms (â€œTranscultural Nursingâ€, 2012). A1. How Nurses Implement Transcultural Nursing Due to the unprecedented levels of immigration to the United States, nurses today are faced with increased levels of cultural diversity. An example of transcultural nursing in action occurs when an interpreter is provided for non-English speaking patients at my hospital so they can effectively communicate their symptoms and have their health care needs properly met.
