Professional Roles and Values C304 Task 1.docx C304 Professional Roles and Values C304 RGP Task 1: Professional Accountability Western Governors University Professional Accountability Nursing Theory A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is that of Betty Neuman, Neumans Systems Model (NMS). Neumans System Model concentrates on primary care and prevention. The nursing theory also believes in treating individuals' mind, body, and spirit, whole-person care (AHU, 2018). Nurses apply Neumans System Model to implement excellence in nursing by realizing a patient is more than just the disease, illness, or room number. Nurses can care for a patient with holistic care by reducing stressors that may be contributing to their illness or situation when NMS is utilized. NMS fits my professional practice because I work for an organization that believes in whole-person care, and we strive to focus not only on acute care but also on being present in the community supporting prevention and primary care as the first defense. Historical Figures Two historic individuals in nursing are Clara Harlowe Barton, who founded the American Red Cross in 1904, and Dorothea Dix, who was a lobbyist for mental health and opened the first mental health institution in 1861. Clara Barton, an employee of the United States government during the beginning of the Civil War, saw a need for someone to help out the soldiers during this time.
