One in three community dwelling adults in this age bracket fall at least once annually which can result in serious injury, reduced quality of life, reduced independence, and on-going disability[ CITATION You16 \l 1033 ]. For those between the ages of 70 and 80 years, the risk of falling more than doubles[ CITATION Rim16 \l 1033 ]. Significance of the problem A conservative estimate of approximately 110,000 people fall annually, that figure is based on fifteen percent of older adults living in an assisted living facility fall each year[ CITATION Zim17 \l 1033 ]. Falls can be minor and non-injurious, or they can result in serious injury, such as a broken hip. Falls can have physical repercussions and they can also have psychological consequences including a fear of future falls which then impact a persons ability to lead a productive life. Falls occur in the community and in facilities, including long term care, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
