Budget Issues Paper .docx Budget Issues Paper CJA/365 Budget Issues Paper In this paper I will be summarizing a recent article in my state, concerning budget issues with some of my counties police departments. I will also be summarizing what I would do if I was a criminal justice leader, handling this sort of budgetary issue. In the state of Oregon instead of budgeting for more facilities to handle an ever-growing number of inmates, the state pays counties to jail, supervise and treat an array of offenders in their own communities. In the recent two-year budget lawmakers made, many counties have seen a reduction in funds. According to an article by PBS VanderHart (2019), œOn top of an overall reduction in funds flowing out to counties for so-called œcommunity corrections programs, lawmakers disregarded a new study finding that those services are far more costly than previously thought. (para. 5). In one county with a reduction of $5 million dollars in state funds, commissioners had to ax a program that helped inmates to reduce their likelihood to repeat their offense. This program provided education, job skills and substance abuse treatment. Nineteen positions were eliminated in all, and officials spent more than $900,000 in emergency funds in order to avoid immediately closing a 73-bed jail dorm.
