CJA 375 Week 3.doc Emergency Management Response CJA/375 Emergency Management Response When Hurricane Katrina hit the United States, several agencies responded. Other than first responders to these disasters there were numerous secondary responders that assisted. One of the secondary responders was the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard is a branch of the armed forces that is responsible for maritime law and protection of life and property at sea (Oxford, 2020). The Coast Guard play a vital role during Hurricane Katrina in planning, response, and recovery. They were given the missions of search and rescue, management of maritime commerce and marine pollution response. Due to the response of the Coast Guard thousands of lives were rescued. Roles The Incident Command System (ICS) is system that is designed to effectively and efficiently manage a domestic incident. This managing is done by bringing together a combination of several agencies together. These agencies are then organized over a common organizational structure. The structure of ICS consists of five areas. These five areas are command, operations, planning, logistics, intelligence & investigations, finance and administration. A key role in the ICS is the enabling of an incident manager, who need to identify the important concerns that are associated with then incident (FEMA, 2018).
