They have bolstered the critical shortage of nurses (The Nursing Shortage, 2018). The average age of employed registered nurses has increased over the past decade by two years. The increasing age of nurses, combined with a possible strengthening of the economy, will create a more critical shortage for RNs (The Nursing Shortage, 2018). Nurses face sky-rocketing patient acuity levels, shorter hospital stays, and higher patient to nurse ratios. Nurses are also subject to increased demands of maintaining profit margins in a culture of the administrative mindset of doing more with less.
