The main idea of this article is that having cultural competence makes you a better nurse by being able to take care of your patients in a better manner and being aware of when you arent the best nurse to take care of them due to your own beliefs. In the beginning sentence of “Self-Awareness: A tool for providing culturally competent care,” it states, “Cultural competence is essential for establishing rapport with patients”. Showing us the standpoint of the article and what it will be discussing. It also goes on to tell us “By improving communication with patients, culturally competent nursing care increases patient satisfaction and encourages patients to participate in and adhere to the treatment regimen” (Younas, 2020). Which as a licensed practical nurse is something I want for my patients. The article also goes on to explain that for us as nurses to be able to deliver culturally competent care we must have self-awareness. “Self-awareness is an intrapersonal and introspective process one can use to explore and recognize personal, familiar, and professional nursing values, social and cultural beliefs, and life experiences in different nursing situations” (Younas, 2020).
