Introduction Both the administrative and clinical practitioners in the healthcare industry have a legal and ethical responsibility to their patients and their community regarding consent. While the reasons differ between the ethical and legal responsibility for consent the point of the matter is that consent, nay informed consent is the goal between every patient encounter. Often there are times when a patient cannot consent to treatment either life saving or life sustaining. During these instances the differences between legal and ethical responsibility are stretched. In the healthcare field an individual must know the ethical and legal aspects of consent, as well as the definition of the following terms: living wills, advance medical directives, surrogate decision making, ordinary care, and extraordinary care.
