Cancer is a terrible and stressful situation for anyone to be in. Nursing as a discipline is dedicated to the treatment of patients and families during health and disease and in all forms of treatment. As nurses and nursing students assess and prepare treatments to cope with the needs for those faced with cancer. While not part of the oncology unit, student nurses participate in the treatment of cancer patients through their clinical training. Despite positive advancements and developments in cancer treatment in recent years, symptom control and quality of care for cancer patients continues to become more complex and complications are recurrent. Of the student nurses, 80.6 per cent indicated that dealing with cancer patients was "difficult." The challenges faced by the student nurses included patients who declined to take care of them, a substantial number of challenges faced in caring for cancer patients, relationship problems (38.0 per cent), dealing with patients and families who feared death, and family concerns.
