This is because of the increased incidence of risk factors such as genetics within their families and increased bullying at schools or communities from peers. Another concern is that it can be difficult to diagnose children with mental health. This is because of the variability found with children and their physical, emotional and intellectual development. This is especially true with anxiety, which is said to be the most common mental disorder among children. Parents tend to misunderstand the signs of anxiety and tend to get frustrated with the children. It becomes even worse as children begin to grow and experience more social milieus, as they are now more aware of their differences resulting in increased emotional stress (Stewart, 2020). Article Summary According to Stewart (2020), early identification of mental health disorder is of paramount importance. It is thought that 30-50% of children who have an intellectual disability will also have a mental disorder.
