My mentor teacher worked with students in kindergarten through second grade. There was also a paraeducator working virtually as well. I was able to observe both my mentor and the paraeducator deliver supports and strategies to all their students, ELL or not. Strategies The reading lesson focused on identifying sounds. The writing lesson focused on the students writing their name. Grammar was focused on through verbal, informal conversations throughout the lesson, even through normal discussions. One strategy that I observed was the use of a game called ABC Bingo. Students were given bingo cards with different alphabets on it. The teacher would call out the sound of a letter, and the students were to find the letter on their card that matched. Another strategy used was having the students write their names multiple times. This was done using placement boxes that would be removed systemically. Basically, the students would have a placement box for each of their letters in the beginning. After the student wrote their name one of the boxes, the name would be removed at the end, until the student was writing their name without the boxes. The strategy for grammar was story telling.
