The values people are taught are what shape and mold them into the people they grow up to be. The values also help to choose life partners. When you are working to be become a counselor you must distinguish between your personal values and your professional values. When becoming a counselor, it is your role to be unbiased, so that you can help the client become a healthier version of themselves. “ The main duty of counselors is to recognize the dignity and wellbeing of clients” (ACA, 2012). Client Rights Autonomy As a counselor you must remember to actively listen to the client to be able to gain an understanding of what their goal is during their time in sessions. It may be good for some counselors to practice motivational interviewing because it is a great way to understand the clients and give positive reinforcement.
