This statistic shows the need for substance abuse prevention programs for at-risk youth populations. These programs are designed to target problem behaviors before they occur, stop the behavior for those already started, and to divert drug offenders to treatment and recovery for at-risk populations. Description D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is a substance abuse prevention education program where millions of school children around the world are given the skills to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. It was founded in 1983 and is a police led series of classroom lessons teaching children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to withstand peer pressure along with how to live productive lives free of drugs and violence (D.A.R.E., 2020). This program uses an evidence-based take home program for families that include activities, lessons, and talks that are developmentally appropriate for each grade that reinforce the lesson concepts learned at school.
