C-228 Task 2 Communicable Disease Outbreak-Measles Â Â Â Â C-228 Task 2 Communicable Disease Outbreak-Measles International Outbreak (B) Description of Measles Outbreak (2014) Measles is a highly contagious systemic viral disease that continues to be one of the most important causes of death among young children seen on a global scale. Initial symptoms include: fevers, runny nose, reddened eyes, systemic body rash (tiny red spots), and tiny white spots on the inside of the mouth referred to as â€œkoplick spotsâ€. These symptoms appear 10-12 days post infection and may develop into more severe symptoms to include: blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhea, and respiratory infections like pneumonia. Vaccination against measles has shown to be very effective at preventing this viral infection. The MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine given in two doses has shown to be 97% effective globally among those who come into contact with this highly deadly virus (CDC, 2018). In 2014, the United States experienced a total of 23 confirmed incidents of measles outbreaks. The most concerning outbreak which included a total of 383 known cases occurred during the time period of four months; March 24, 2014 to July 23, 2014 in Ohio. This particular region was inhabited primarily by unvaccinated Amish families that included young children and elderly. The outbreak was carefully researched and tracked back to the main introductory source.
