The self-care theory of Dorthea Orem focuses on people taking an active role in their own healthcare. I have been in the healthcare field for 22 years and I am still amazed at the thought processes of the population. Health care providers are often believed to be responsible to heal people with little to no responsibility on the patients and family members. I believe that it is the responsibility of the healthcare providers to educate patients and caregivers in efforts to bridge the gap and teach people how they can help care for themselves and increase the state of their own wellbeing. Honestly speaking, who would you say should be more invested in the health and wellbeing of the patient? Surely it should be the patient. A1. Nurses use the self-care theory to provide patients, their families, and caregivers with ample knowledge and confidence to take charge of their health. This is a great predictor of excellent nursing practice. By taking charge and playing an active role in their care, it becomes clear how the actions and efforts taken today will affect their long term health with a great focus on preventive medicine. A2.
