Education of new nurses often centers around the physiology of nursing and the medical disease process. Somewhere between the Florence Nightingale era and now the art of communication has been steadily declining. Society is becoming less interactive and withdrawn behind their electronic world and verbal-in-person communication has become less prevalent. Peplau (1997) defines “Interpersonal relations is a conceptual framework derived in large part from empirical study of human interactions, which aids nurses in enlarging their understand of what transpires during nurse-patient relationships†(Peplau, 1997, p. 162). Education and focus on the patient as a partner will ultimately lead to better patient care and patient safety. With the future focused on less face-to-face contact through tools such as telemedicine, it is imperative that the nurse have a solid understanding of proper communication and how to develop an interpersonal relationship with the patient.
