Alcohol Use Disorder leads to roughly 2.5 million deaths per year worldwide if it goes untreated. Juan is a 59-year-old Latino male who is struggling with the substance abuse of alcohol. According to the DSM diagnostic codes, it is clear to say that Juan is suffering from Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Many healthcare professionals use this criterion to assess whether a person has AUD and what the severity of the disorder. “Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. It encompasses the conditions that some people refer to as alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol addiction, and the colloquial term, alcoholism†(NIAAA, 2020, para. 1). AUD consists of constant and repetitive alcohol consumption that in which cause a great amount of dysfunction and agony, if followed by two of the following symptoms that last the span of a 12-month period.
