Small businesses often opt for small routers to serve their needs while large companies use enterprise grade networking equipment. One similar factor remains, most companies rely on network and internet access for day to day business operations. I work in a high volume automotive shop and every aspect of our business is dependent on having a reliable network. Everything from technician scanners to credit card terminals are linked to the network. Our shop has invested heavily in up to date technical tools, cleaning equipment, and diagnostic softwares but there has been no investment in our network, the thing we rely on the most. Our shop currently employs 26 service advisors, 122 technicians, 31 support staff, and 6 managers. Communication between all of these people can be a feat in its own right. The biggest challenge I see in the shop is the lack of communication channels between technician and advisor. The shop sees an average of 280 customer cars 6 days a week and speed of communication between the front of the house and the rear is a bottleneck. Each advisor could be dealing with up to 30 technicians at any one given moment. The manufacturer I work for requires all warranty repair claims be accompanied by detailed photographs taken by the technician or the service advisor.
