In 1830 Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which would see more than 45,000 Native Americans to relocate to new reservations in Indian Territory, which is now known as Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears œcovers nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Tennessee. (HISTORY.COM, 2020). The first group of Native Americans began their forced march in the summer of 1838, but the œremaining 12,000 waited in prison camps and traveled through the freezing temperatures of the winter of 1838-1839. (McGill, 2017). Four thousand Cherokees, about one quarter of their population died as a result of The Indian Removal Act. This event is a significant event in history for many reasons. This event shows how horrible history can be and reminds us to not make the same mistakes. It shows us the growth of our country and provides guidance for moving forward. Most importantly it shows us what the Native Americans went through. It shows us the heartache and truth in such an atrocious act that was performed by our own government. It keeps the memories alive of those who didn™t make it and brings forth a sense of justice for the Native Americans.
