Candidates should answer ONE question from this section. You should allow
approximately an hour for this section of the paper.
1. Critically examine the role of law in local authority social work practice with
children and families.
2. Critically appraise the role of a social worker providing a service to children at
risk of becoming looked after by a local authority. In your answer, consider the
legal powers and duties of local authorities in relation to ‘care’ and
accommodation of children.
3. Why is legal knowledge essential for social workers providing a service to
children who are at risk of or suffering significant harm?
