Critically examine the role of law in local authority social work practice with children and families. 2. Critically appraise the role of a social worker providing a service to children at risk of becoming looked after by a local authority. In your answer, consider the legal powers and duties of local authorities in relation to ‘care’ and accommodation of children. 3. Why is legal knowledge essential for social workers providing a service to children who are at risk of or suffering significant harm? SECTION B - Unseen questions Answer FOUR of the following nine questions. These questions are intended to have shorter answers: allowing approximately fifteen minutes for each answer in this section means that you can spend an equal amount of time on each section of the paper. 4. What would indicate that one might seek one order rather than the other? 3 SCW206 SCW206 - PROFESSIONAL LAW IN PRACTICE Candidates are asked to answer: ONE question from Section A, FOUR subsidiary questions from Section B, and ONE question from Section C. TIME ALLOWED: THREE HOURS 10. What is the definition of a ‘child in need’, and what rights are acquired by children who appear to be in need? 11. Explain the meaning of the term ‘significant harm’ as it is used by social workers in a child and family context, and discuss why it is important for social workers. 12. What powers may a social worker use to remove a possibly abusive adult from a child’s home, and under what conditions may these powers be obtained and used?
