Assignment 2: Argument Synthesis (7 pages w/ works cited) Task To compose an argument synthesis using at least six credible sources while utilizin... g the elements of argumentation/appeals of argument as we have discussed them in class. The essay must include an MLA works cited page. The topic of this essay should come from the questions listed in this prompt. If you develop an essay based on a subject that is NOT on this list or has not been approved by the instructor, you will receive a zero for the assignment. The list is located on the last page of this instruction sheet. Developing the Thesis Purpose: Your purpose is to persuade. This is an argumentative research paper (an argument synthesis) and should have a strong action. The thesis statement should be made up of a claim that demonstrates a strong action and forecasted support for your argument. For example: Gambling, specifically casino gambling, should be made illegal in the state of Michigan because it promotes criminal activity, encourages gambling addiction, and is a costly endeavor for the state’s taxpayers. *Here, the claim is underlined; should be made illegal is a strong, specific action or change that can be made. The forecasted support is listed in bold. Supporting the Argument: What kinds of sources should I use? For this assignment, you will be required to write a 7-8 page argument synthesis which uses a minimum of six (6) credible sources with a maximum of ten (10) sources. Because if the scope of this essay, you should not need more than 10 sources. If you add more than ten sources, you run the risk of letting the research take over the paper and you’ll lose your voice as an author. Requirements You must use at least two (2) sources from the online research databases at OCC; you may use more than two, but you must have a minimum of two. You may use informational sources, but you may NOT use Wikipedia. You may use two credible open web sources toward your six source minimum. You must practice ethical source integration. You must provide direct quotation from your sources. You must provide at least ONE correctly formatted MLA block quote (long quote). There are many ways to organize an argument. Some choose to place the opposition at the beginning of the essay, while others like to look at the opposition at the end. One setup might look like this: Intro with current debate/situation and thesis statement Background (Informative Paragraph; Defines any important terms while providing a brief history/background of the topic) Your Argument: Claim>Reference>Analysis>Reference>Analysis Your Argument: Claim>Reference>Analysis>Reference>Analysis Your Argument: Claim>Reference>Analysis>Reference>Analysis Opposition: Claim>Reference>Analysis>Reference>Analysis Rebuttal Conclusion To complete this essay, you must do/have the following: Works Cited page in correct MLA format Six (6) credible sources (each must be cited at least once); do not exceed ten sources for this essay You must use at least one (1) block quotes A strong, arguable thesis statement with support/points listed (forecasted) Topic sentences that link the thesis statement to the supporting paragraphs An objective opposition paragraph A rebuttal that relies on the elements of critique/appeals of argument for evaluation Be sure to introduce and cite each source Mastery of grammar and mechanical issues A focused, appropriate title Also keep in mind this is a synthesis, so this assignment requires you to utilize two (2) sources per body paragraph; I would not recommend using more than three (3) sources per reason/support paragraph as the tendency then is to quote stack. Introduce, quote, and discuss each source before moving on to another source. Also remember to make connections between sources. An example: “In an argument similar to Smith’s, Arlene Jones discusses…” The topic is: Should the federal government be allowed to regulate information on the internet? Thesis Statement: The federal government should not regulate information on the internet as it is unconstitutional, limits the free flow of information, and because the government isn't equipped to handle something that is continuously changing.
