Domestic Violence: A Survivor’s Story Domestic violence is a major problem that an estimated 1 in 3 women face during their lifetime. BR is one of those women. She is sitting here today willing to ... share her story in hopes that it may help someone else experiencing domestic violence. This paper will include her personal and detailed feelings and experiences. It will also include statistics on prevalence, contributing factors such as socio-economic aspects, social justice to help the victims, ethical issues associated with domestic violence, and a plan for health care providers to recognize signs of domestic violence and devise a safe treatment plan to help combat this growing epidemic. Background of Women Affected by Domestic Violence Domestic violence is hard to precisely measure due to some cases going unreported. This is most likely due to the social stigma behind domestic violence, or simply fear on the part of the victim. BR explains that therefore she allowed her domestic violence to go unreported for years. She was afraid because of embarrassment of what people would think, and afraid of what her husband would do. So, she suffered in silence. In studies though, researchers estimate that nearly three million women per year are victims of domestic violence (National Organization for Women (NOW), 2018). This means that roughly 20 women are being abused every minute (National Organization for Women (NOW), 2018). BR said she never wants to experience any of those minutes again. The consequences of domestic violence go far beyond the injuries sustained. BR says that the abuse started as verbal disagreements in which she was called named and put down. She was unaware that this was considered abuse. That is another contributing factor to why some cases go unreported, everyone classifies abuse differently. Verbal abuse is linked to being a precursor to physical abuse in domestic violence cases. BR wishes she would have seen the warning signs earlier. [Show More]
