Roles in Advanced Practice Nursing Gee E. Kim Chamberlain University NR500NP-10772 Foundational Concepts and Advanced Practice roles January 13, 2021 2 Roles in Advanced Practice Nursing Contin ... uing education is an essential part of nursing. This includes advanced degrees, obtaining different certifications, adapting to new policies and procedures, and implementing different skills and technologies. An Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a nurse with an advanced degree and certifications who can practice at higher level of patient care with a widened scope of practice. APNs can make medical decisions, including diagnosing medical conditions, ordering tests and diagnostics, and evaluating outcome (American Nurses Association, n.d.). Depending on the state, APNs can work in various healthcare setting with different scopes of practice and specialty. Depending on the certification and training, APNs can be divided into the following roles: Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), Certified Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and Certified Nurse-Midwife. In this paper, I will be exploring different roles in advanced practice nursing, the transition process, including strategies and key factors, as well as my plans for clinical practice as an advanced practice nurse upon graduation. Roles Certified Nurse Practitioner A Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) is a master’s prepared nurse who works directly with the patient by providing primary health and preventive care in a wide range of populations. They are authorized to work in various settings such as in- or out-patient hospitals, specialty clinics, health agencies, private practice, as well as healthcare organizations. Depending on the state level and their specialty, CNPs can work autonomously by diagnosing, managing, and treating acute or chronic illnesses. They also provide health promotion, disease prevention, participate in research, as well as serve as patient advocates (AANP, 2019). Becoming a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree in nursing is the first step of becoming a CNP. Subsequently, the candidate must earn a master’s degree in nursing or doctoral nursing followed by passing a national nurse practitioner certification exam. There are also further specialization credentials relating to specialties such as Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and many more (AANP, 2020). Certified Nurse Specialist A Certified Nurse Specialist (CNS) is also an advanced practice registered nurse who holds a master’s or doctoral degree. Their role is to improve the healthcare delivery system by acting as a clinical expert, educator, researcher, and consultant in a specialized area of nursing. Within their specialty, they evaluate and research current practices, promote staff development, analyze patient data and outcomes, and develop better treatment along with education plans. CMS works collaboratively with other health care professionals including doctors, nurses, and technicians in a variety of settings such as outpatient care facilities and in- or out-patient hospitals. Similar to CNPs, becoming a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree in nursing is the first step to becoming a CNS. After gaining experience in different areas of nursing, the candidate can pursue their education in a chosen specialty through an accredited master’s or doctorate program focusing on the clinical nurse specialist track (NACNS, 2021). Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a nurse who is certified to provide anesthesia and anesthesia-related care. They administer anesthesia, assess, and monitor patients pre-, peri-, and post-operatively. They can work within in- or out-patient hospitals, clinics, surgical centers, pain management centers, and more. To be eligible to enroll in an accredited [Show More]
