Once my spending is in different categories, I set a percentage of my earnings for each type. I could also invest in an accountant who could help me not go over my spending limits. Financial Savings Goal and Time Frame My financial goal is to save $20,000 for a down payment to buy a house over a time frame of five years. I plan to own home shortly for my children to have stability while growing up. Also, rather than paying rent each month to never own anything doesn't sound like the best plan for me. Now, paying a mortgage for my home sounds more like it. As I do my calculations, to save up $20,000 for a down payment within a five-year time frame, I would have to save up $4,000 a year.
