One of the most prominent law is the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law, which protects consumers “who purchases goods or services for personal, family, or household goods” (Sweeney & Englund, 2005). Also referred to as the PA’s UDAP statute, the Unfair Trade Practices, and Consumer Protection Law, was enacted in 1968. This law was executed due to the "unfair methods of competition" and "unfair or deceptive acts or practices," of companies. The primary purpose of the law is to guarantee that customers who use goods or services for household purposes are protected against these types of actions. Some business practices that are deemed improper, unfair methods of competition, and deceptive under the Unfair Trade Practices, and Consumer Protection Law includes the following. 1. “Advertising products for sale with the intent not to sell them as advertised” 2. “Proving goods or services as those of someone” 3. “Causing likelihood of confusion as to the source of goods” 4. “Claiming that goods are new when they are not” 5. “Advertising goods for sale with the intent not to sell them as advertised” 6. “Claiming that goods or services have characteristics, ingredients, uses, or benefits that they do not have” (Sawchak, 2014, p. 1882). Consumers who have being victims of these treatment that the statute prohibits can file a lawsuit against the company for any “ascertainable loss of money or property, real or personal” (Miller, 2014,). The plaintiff can recover actual damages or money, whichever is greater.
