Ethical Challenges HIM professionals face ethica... l challenges every day. Today we will review a few of these challenges so you are familiar with them. We will discuss the concerns each challenge poses, what the ramifications are of doing the wrong thing and ways they can be addressed using the AHIMA Code of Ethics as your guide. 3 Ethical issues you may come across during your career are privacy, release of information (ROI) and documentation. Privacy Scenario Challenge – Amy is a Health Information Technician who works in the records department of a large hospital. The hospital has stick guidelines of employees using company equipment to search the web on or off the clock. Her sons birthday is coming up and he wants a puppy, with her busy schedule she has not had time to search for one while at home. She decides it wont hurt to surf the web in search for a puppy on her lunch one day. She clicks a link to a puppy site and her system starts flashing and running a program then stops and returns to her home screen. She can notify IT of what happened and get reprimanded by her supervisor for surfing the web or not say anything at all since her computer appears to be fine now. ROI Scenario Challenge – Jim is a Patient Registrar who works for a group provider practice.
