Professional_Roles_and_Values_Task_2_C304.docx C304 Task 2 Ethical Dilemma Professional Roles and Values C304 NURSING PRINCIPLES The situation presented with Mr. Newcomb and his request to mak... e arrangements to see his mistress is an interesting ethical dilemma. The relationship developed between patient and caregiver is strong and would suggest that arrangements would be made however, as his nurse in this predicament, I would have to decline his request professionally. I would explain that it would be both unethical and unprofessional of me to come between him and his wife. As a nurse, it is my responsibility to remain professional, competent, and compassionate in any situation. Mr. Newcomb has every right to see whomever he chooses and whenever he chooses, and I would support that, but I would not lie to his spouse. The principles that apply to this situation are autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. The first principle, autonomy, is the “right to self-determination… [providing] nursing care based on respect of patients rights to make decisions about their healthcare†(Cherry & Jacobs, 2017, p.167). Over time, Mr. Newcomb would trust that as his nurse, I would not pass judgement. Although I acknowledge his request for the presence of his mistress I would not interfere in his marriage but he is “free to decide whatever he … wishes†(Cherry & Jacobs, 2017, p. 170). My beliefs may be in disagreement with his, but I am honoring his right as a patient to make whatever plans he sees fit. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
