Nurses are always learning and teaching in the profession so that we can be the most effective for our patients and for the progression of the profession. For nurses to be the most effective teachers for the patients, we must be able to identify what types of learners we are and all the other types of learning there is in order for us to be the most effective teachers for our patients. The ability to understand a person's learning styles can increase the educational outcome and increase positive patient outcomes. There are many tools and resources out there to help identify someone™s specific style of learning, one is VARK. Find your Inner VARK Learner VARK is an acronym for the four sensory methods used in learning. V is for visual, A for auditory, R for reading and writing and K for kinesthetics found by Fleming and Mills in 1987 (Whitney, 2018). After taking the VARK questionnaire, I found that I am a mild kinesthetic learner with a close second read/write modality. Fleming and Mills believed most people were multimodal learners and therefore correlates to my learning style being multimodal or having more than one learning preference.
