u03a1 DiagnosticApproaches.doc COUN5107 Running head: DIAGNOSTIC APPROACHES 1 U03A1 Diagnostic Approaches COUN5107 – Principles of Psychopathology Diagnostic Approaches This paper explores the case of Annie, a 13-year-old Asian American girl who is struggling with anxiety when taking exams, fear and anxiety about becoming sick, extreme shyness and avoidance of new or large social situations, and fears of being alone and in the dark at night. Annies case will be explored by having three models of psychopathology applied: the biological model, the psychological model, and the sociocultural model. Two assessment instruments, the Parent/Guardian-Rated DSM-5 Level 1 Cross Cutting Symptom Measure and the Cultural Formulation Interview, will be explored in application to her case as well. The DSM-V will be discussed as a viable guide for diagnosis and Z-codes for further exploration and focus of Annies treatment will be presented. Throughout the process cultural sensitivity will be explore and discussed, as it is ethically required for counselors to ensure cultural sensitivity when diagnosing and treating clients (APA, 2014).
