Final Project Milestone One.docx SCI 333 SCI 333 Milestone One: The Vertac Site and Dioxins in Arkansas Waterways Department of Environmental Sciences SCI 333 - Waste: Sources, Reduction, Remediation The Vertac Site in Jacksonville, Arkansas is one of the nation™s worst hazardous waste sites (Encyclopedia of Arkansas, 2020). There are about 1,000 residents living within a mile of the site due to the inclusion of residential homes and apartment complexes bordering the entire south and east sides. I am specifically analyzing the water pollution in the Bayou Meto Watershed and surrounding rivers, creeks, and lakes near the Vertac Site. I chose this site of water pollution for my paper because growing up in rural Arkansas, near the Vertac Site, my grandparents and their friends always told me to stay out of the water because it would make me sick. There wasn™t anyone in the 1980™s in Jacksonville that didn™t know someone that had developed Cancer of other illnesses caused by the exposure to chemical pollutants from the Vertac Site. Using the areas surrounding the Vertac Site as my point of water waste pollution research for this paper will shed some light onto the environmental issues that arose with the site being used for pesticide and other chemical productions and the by-products not being properly disposed of.
