Modernized equipment used in agriculture, food manufacturing and transportation are leading contributors of harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Agriculture alone is without reservation accountable for roughly 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions, and broader rural land use decisions have an even larger impact. Desertification contributes to an additional roughly 20% of emissions (World Future Council, 2016). Although most parts of the world are concentrating on shifting away from non-renewable fossil fuels in order to confront the climate change crisis, another, consistently precluded from climate change conversations is animal agriculture and the adverse effects it has on the environment. Animal agriculture businesses are the second major contributor to human produced greenhouse gas emissions just behind non-renewable fossil fuels and is a leading cause of desertification air and water pollution and biodiversity losses (Climate Nexus, 2016).
